The secret to clear skin?
- A healthy diet
- Good genes
- Targeted skincare
Trick question – the answer is all three, and then some. In the ever-evolving world of skincare ingredients, finding the right actives for your skin can feel like a never-ending quest. Some (including me) might say that’s part of the fun. If you’re not up for trawling through all the options, one ingredient stands out for its proven effectiveness and versatility: salicylic acid. Whether you’re battling acne, striving for smoother skin, or simply looking to maintain a clear complexion, salicylic acid might just be the hero to level up your skincare routine.

What is salicylic acid?
Extracted from willow tree bark, salicylic acid is an astringent, oil-soluble BHA (beta hydroxy acid) chemical exfoliant. It has astringent, regenerative and antiseptic properties, so it helps prevent the growth and spread of bacteria, including the micro organism responsible for acne breakouts. In skincare you’ll find both natural and synthetic versions.
What does it do?
Salicylic acid properties allow it to cut through oil and deeply exfoliate blocked pores, removing dead skin cells and sebum, some of the key culprits for causing spots, whiteheads and blackheads. It encourages cellular turnover and helps to get rid of dead skin cells, resulting in brighter skin and smoother skin texture. Because it stimulates collagen production, salicylic acid can help to reduce signs of ageing like fine lines and wrinkles. And thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties it’s also a saviour for acne-prone skin, reducing the angry redness you can get from breakout flare ups.

Who’s it best for?
As you may have already guessed, this skincare staple is ideal for oily and combination skins that are prone to spots and breakouts – no wonder Allure describes salicylic acid as “one of acne’s biggest enemies”. It also works wonders on dull skin (due to dead cells build up).
Did you know?
- The European regulations stipulate that a cosmetic product for the face must not contain more than 2% salicylic acid, so you’ll often see that percentage featured on the product or even in the product name (source: Typology)
- Salicylic acid can help prevent future breakouts: it penetrates skin and works to dissolve the dead skin cells clogging pores. It can take up to 6 weeks of consistent use to see its full effect, so don’t give up too quickly – unless of course your skin is getting irritated
- Salicylic acid isn’t just for blackheads, it can also help in reducing dandruff, which is caused by a slowing down of skin cells sloughing off
